Providing the yin to Joe's yang, Diane is pragmatic and practical. Her professional journey has led through many fields that honed her natural instincts for research, risk reduction, asset protection and business administration. Born in the Midwest, Diane discovered Punta Gorda's charms while vacationing in 2009 and quickly set about making it her home. Through her service to several local non-profits, Diane observed a significant lack of affordable housing in Punta Gorda, and the effects this shortage has had on industry and growth. Diane is driven by the belief that Punta Gorda has the potential to be more than a retirement community, and can be shared by both young and old alike, in a way that will enrich the lives of all.
Affordable housing is good for the economy. When a community offers housing opportunities to a full spectrum of economic classes, everyone wins. Tax bases increase, jobs are created, and the services and industries that enrich our lives are able to grow and thrive.
Punta Gorda has enough "55+" housing! We believe it's time to offer
a slice of this tropical paradise to hardworking, middle class
families because they have so much to bring to the table!
For over 100 years, Punta Gorda has identified as a seasonal playground for affluent retirees. But what happens when those retirees can't get medical appointments or adequate restaurant service? High seasonality and lack of affordable housing have a dually damaging effect on service industries. Employers are forced to lay off half of their workforce at the end of each season, losing experienced human resources. Contemporaneously, the lack of clean, safe, local and affordable housing discourages year-round labor from settling in the area, and instead pushes human capital to the larger cities of Fort Myers and Sarasota. When will we learn that a well-rounded community needs a permanent young workforce?
One of Punta Gorda's greatest weaknesses has been the seasonal nature of our economy. When a community's population shrinks by 50% each summer, service and healthcare industries struggle to survive and to maintain adequate and experienced staffing. Yet, as Florida's winning economic policies under the skilled leadership of Governor Ron DeSantis attract more and more transplants, the seasonality is starting to fade. Now is the time to open our community to enterprising young professionals, entrepreneurs and tradesmen! When industry thrives, families thrive. With affordable housing, Punta Gorda can become a permanent home to a strong and vibrant workforce that will fuel a robust hospitality industry.
